British Sign Language (BSL)
BSL is the language of the Deaf community. It has its own vocabulary, structure and grammar which is different from English. It is a visual, gestural language which uses handshapes, facial expression and body language to express meaning.
"I’m Mark, born deaf, so BSL is my first language and English is my second language. I teach BSL as an introduction to signing for those who are interested in learning to sign. Classes are suitable for anyone aged 16+ whether you are a complete beginner or already know some signs. They are fun and relaxed and there are no exams, so no pressure! Although these classes do not lead to recognised qualifications, they are an excellent way to learn everyday signs for the workplace or social situations, or as preparation for further study."
Please note:- if the BSL class you are interested in is fully booked then please do let us know as we can add you to our waiting list or we may even be able to set up additional classes.
Many people with hearing loss find following speech difficult. Learning lipreading can help because certain speech sounds, which can often be difficult to hear, make good, identifiable, visible shapes. In lipreading classes you learn about the visible and less visible lip shapes, some useful communication tactics, and explore other topics related to coping with hearing loss.
Lipreading classes aim to be fun, relaxed, interesting and supportive. Like many skills, it takes time to learn, but can bring great benefits to the user, increasing confidence and encouraging independence.
Please note:- if the Lipreading class you are interested in is fully booked then please do let us know as we can add you to our waiting list or we may even be able to set up additional classes.
